Every night, after every show, I would get everything I needed to hear. That kinda answers one of my questions. Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. But for the most part, Im just glad that I didnt completely F up everything. So my drum solo lasted about 20 minutes. I mean, I didnt say anything inflammatory to him. The idea is not to go in there and try to be Mr. America; the idea is to help yourself. #9. They would have kept going, I know that. Thats an interesting comment. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. So Herbie got his tape, and he played it for us, and he goes, This is your new singer. _[laughs] _And were all looking at each other going, Really. It was unbelievable. We have children together, which are the songs we wrote together, and we have a vested interest, as songwriters, in where they go and where they dont go. I mean, gee whiz. Because it reminds me of so much. Maybe I should just speak for myself. On 1987, The former was transformed from surly blues rock strut to an impossibly glossy radio-metal anthem, replete with a suitably over-the-top guitar solo from guest musician Adrian Vandenberg, whose own titular band had had a big hit with the ballad Burning Heart in the US in 1984. Did you feel like Journey had run its course? but you were never a critics band. So I left them and was out of work for two weeks, which was the longest 1 had ever been out of work. Next I got a small tom-tom, then two cymbals, then a large tom, and sort of built up the kit bit by bit. It was actually overkill for me, but it was interesting because it was so different. By just having the snare drum first, I spent more time practicing the basics. If somebody said anything to me, I'd blow up, because my nerves were shattered from being in a complete state of exhaustion. It worked out better because if I'd had the whole drum kit, it might have been too much all at one time to under- stand. If he has to replace a head for me in the middle ofa set, he'll tune it so it's comparable to me. We finally got Aynsley Dunbar. As bizarre as it sounds, I felt like nothing had ever happened, like our arc of success almost didnt exist. After being on the road, I'd spend a couple of months studying with him once or twice a week. Is it that way in England? I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. The substitute would not know the charts, would not be able to solo or ad-lib or anything else. RM: What set-up are you using these days? They thought that because we had got to the point where we were selling out everywhere and making quite a bit of money, that we had reached stardom. I just love it. Like, Okay, we won the World Series. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. Eventually I got bored with the screeching sound of the violin. I just dont wanna be in the band anymore. Some of em, I think the answer is yes. I didnt want to leave the group, for Christs sake! We redid everything. And the tickets have already been sold. Is it safe to say that theres not communication between you anymore? "Despite his image, Zappa was a very conservative chap," according to de Strulle who said that Zappa disapproved of Dunbar's sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll lifestyle. We were supposed to talk serious contract papers with him right after 4th of July weekend that year. They have machines for all the different muscles in your body. And I think what Steve felt at that point that he wanted to fold the band and go back to working on his grandfathers ranch. Much like a lot of people are. Oh no! I look over at the bar, and they're all sitting by the bar drinking! And the theory coming from Steve, and I kind of understood it, was that everybodyll go out and be able to express themselves musically in some other areas, and then when we reconvene, perhaps we will have discovered or found things that we can bring to the group to help the group evolve. You cant bust me for steroids, but youre gonna bust me for perjuryI get it! 'Oh no, this is not for me, I went home, and the next after noon John Mayall called me up and said, "I was sitting in the audience last night and I was wondering if you'd come down and sit in with my band." Every time I told somebody I was writing a story about the new lead singer of Journey, Id get the same incredulous response: Steve Perrys not the lead singer of Journey anymore? Even though the piece I was writing was mostly going to be about Arnel Pineda (whose pre-Journey work can be seen here) and the present-day incarnation of the band, I knew I couldnt write anything about Journey without getting in touch with Steve Perry. At first, I was scared about really doing it, because I thought, "What would it be like to be muscle-bound and go on stage? I had to spend some time doing something which didn't take too much mental thought-something I could just have fun with. That only lasted for six months, because Mayall wanted me to stop playing as much as I was, and become more of a blues drummer. And I hope you print that, because its important that people know that. Nothing was more important than being part of this huge family called Journey. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. It ends up costing an absolute fortune. Oh, most certainly, I was the new kid on the block with them. They just wanted some songs to get on the radio. I wouldnt drink onstage, but Id get offstage, and when I got in the bus, thered be a chilled bottle of whatever vodka I was drinking, and Id start plowin into it. I came off stage feeling perfectly happy and wonderful, whereas I used to come off stage being on the very edge. **. Do you think that dynamic was set up from the beginning? You spend more time counting out the bars than you do listening to the music and understanding it. I think it was in Denver, Coloradothey were opening for Emerson, Lake and Palmer at the time. But our relationships by then were not the greatest. RM: How did you decide on your particular style? It sort of gives a rush in the feel, without actually rushing. I was a Journeyman. And I tried to get to David Chase to try to thank him, and I have yet to be able to. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. They couldn't see any further than where they were at. I think the beginning of the end was when Neal started his solo career. I wanted to play. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. It's a great interview that gives insight into how mega-bands really work. It was a wonderful experience. I was the new kid. **. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. You forget about it if you don't play it, and most rock bands don't tend to play it. Aynsley was also a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Okay. AD: I started playing violin when I was nine. You know what? Only one night did I have to have a shot of B12 with an anti-inflammatory. AD: No. AD: On. Sopranos! Its like, What the fuck? It was unbelievably cool. And then you went on hiatus. Aynsley Dunbar currently tours with Eric Burdon and The New Animals. And the show was gonna air on Sunday, finally, my publisher got back to me saying well, they need to know, and I said, If theyll tell me how its used, then Ill be glad to let go of my own equal approval. So I had to swear to not tell nobody, which I did, and they told me how the show ends. Ask me the question again? RM: You've done quite a bit of recording. I could go out and I could have eight, nine, ten vodkas, and then I wouldnt drink for another three or four days. Aynsley Dunbar's age is 77. The name wasnt settled yet. So I felt, seeing as I'm doing that, I might as well be running my own band and making some cash, because we were on a paid wage routine with him. He will just come in with an idea of what he wants to hear, and we'll all work it out. Do you find that the smaller drums give more "punch"? It sounded good. Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. During the time I was with Bowie, I also did Nils Lofgren's first solo album. So Columbia was pushing Journey to write more commercial music? I think anything beyond a 5 or 6-minute solo is a waste of time. And theres been some that I wasnt too pleased about, but my feet had been held to the fire, slightly, so I had to. "Freedom at Point Zero," I play a 16-bardfum opening, and it has to be the same, basically. RM: Not too many rock drummers use 20" bass drums. I did not like it, one bit. I was against that. So I decided to try drums. And the legacy continues, with Arnel. What I thought I had to be? I wanna let go. And Im sure they thought, Oh, there he goes. I didn't know who the hell John Mayall was, so I asked my wife, and she said she thought he was a. country/western singer. I could never tune it properly, but then I put one of the cast rims on it and it made such a big difference, it's unbelievable. AD: I left school when I was 15, and immediately formed a trio with a sax player and a keyboard player. It was like being on a baseball team. When Im ready Im ready. And I said, I understand that.
